Venezuela, South America

April 14 to April 21, 1985

We stayed at the Melia Caribe, which was adequate, comfortable, but not a classy hotel.

April 15th - At 11 am in the Carabela Salon, we had a welcome briefing by our Sunquest representatives Enrique and Juisan.

April 16th - One Day in Caracas

This tour includes a visit to Simon Bolivar's birthplace (Casa Natal), the liberators home followed by a walk through the financial district of Caracas visiting the Bolivar Square, the Congress Building.  We then were taken on their new and exciting subway from Capitolio Station to Plaza Venezuela Station.  Next stop was the Avenue of the Heroes (Los Proceres), a beautiful place surrounded by fountains and statues of their liberators.  There was a delightful promenade and lunch at the Officer's Club.  A delicious buffet was serviced and right after a visit to modern Caracas on the east side of the city where you saw the beautiful residential areas and a panoramic view of the valley from Av. Boyaca (3,000 feet about sea level).  Our final stop was the colonial museum and the National Pantheon:  Simon Bolivar's Tomb.

April 17th & 18th - Canaima

Angel Falls:  You get the real feeling of the Venezuelan jungle taking off from Maiquetia, which is a two hour flight where you get to see the highest waterfall in the world on clear days.  Canaima Camp is in the middle of a Rain Forest surrounded by wilderness on an island on the Carrao River.  This was a once in a life time experience.

April 18th - Colonia Tovar

Our first stop this morning was at El Junquito Park on the way to the German Village, a charming town 80 km. from Caracas.  This town was settled by immigrants from the Black Forest in 1843.  Our visit included a stop at the German Pottery Factory followed by lunch at the Black Forest Inn, where we savored the superb dishes which have made Germany famous.  This village was quite nice, and I bought my only souvenir there, a ceramic candlestick holder. However, if you have been to the real Germany than this place does not stand up in comparison.

April 19th & 20th - Dinner at Tascamars, which was located in our hotel.  This restaurant specialized in fish (e.g., squid in its own ink, octupuss, sea bass steak, etc.  This was a very charming, reasonably priced place to eat.  The food was excellent, good service and live entertainment.  The nights we were there they had a singer and guitar player who were quite good.
